System of Record vs. System of Action: Where should your Data Live?

A common mistake in GTM architecture is trying to make your CRM do everything. To build a high-performance stack, you must distinguish between your System of Record and your System of Action.
System of Record (The CRM / Data Warehouse)
This is where data is Stored and Governed. It is the source of truth for your Board reports and your financial audits.
- Characteristics: Highly structured, slow to change, focuses on "Accuracy."
System of Action (Salesloft, Outreach, Slack)
This is where work is Performed. This is where reps live.
- Characteristics: High velocity, flexible, focuses on "Efficiency."
The Rule of Syncing
Data should flow from the System of Action to the System of Record in near-real-time. But the Logic (e.g., "What email should I send next?") should live in the System of Action.
Don't force your reps to live in your System of Record. They will hate it, and your data quality will suffer. Build a bridge between the two.
